Nearsighted (Myopia)

Nearsighted (Myopia)
A person with myopia can read books and see nearby objects clearly — but distant objects like road signs, whiteboards, or faces across a room appear out of focus.

Myopia is a refractive error where the eyeball is slightly too long or the cornea is too curved, causing light to focus in front of the retina instead of on it. Near objects remain clear, while distance vision becomes blurry.

Unlike farsightedness, people with myopia often read, use screens, and do detailed close work comfortably. This is why myopia can go unnoticed in children until school screening or difficulty with the classroom board appears.

Risk increases with family history, prolonged near work, limited outdoor time in children, and onset commonly between ages 8–15. Regular eye exams help track progression and protect long-term eye health.
